Massachusetts Luxury Tax

Have more questions? Submit a request

SimpleConsign does not currently have a built in setting to automatically calculate Massachusetts’ luxury tax for items priced over $175. Because of this, users must manually handle how tax is applied at checkout.

In Massachusetts, most items such as jewelry and furniture are taxable. Clothing and shoes are not taxed if the item price is $175 or less (there can be gray areas for accessories like belts and hats). For any taxable item priced over $175, you must place the item in a taxable category and apply a tax credit at checkout (via the item below) so that sales tax is only charged on the portion of the price above $175, not the full amount.

The tax credit only applies when the item’s final price is over $175. If the item is discounted or marked down to $175 or less, the credit will no longer work. In that case, you will need to either change the item to a non-taxable category or use the Quick Add option to ensure tax is not applied.

*You should check with an accountant / bookkeeper / the state website for clarification on qualifying taxable / tax exempt items - we can not offer you advice on this.
